In 1994 a movement came to stir up and call attention to the social conditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Highlands of Chiapas. This movement triggered a series of mobilizations on the part of the official government sector which tried to mitigate the armed offensive of what was called the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).
